Sheldon Adelson named Nevada Hotelier of the Year

LAS VEGAS SANDS CHAIRMAN AND CEO SHELDON ADELSON NAMED NEVADA HOTELIER OF THE YEAR

Las Vegas — Sheldon G. Adelson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp., which owns and operates The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, will be honored as the Nevada Hotelier of the Year during the Hospitality Design Expo & Conference Platinum Awards Gala on Wednesday, May 19, 2010.
“Mr. Adelson is being honored by his colleagues and peers in the industry for his leadership, vision and exemplary contributions to Nevada’s lodging and tourism industry,” said Van V. Heffner, president & CEO, NH&LA. “The hospitality industry faced many challenges in 2009, but no one stood up to those challenges and positioned his company for future success better than Sheldon Adelson. Over the years he has played an important role in the success of Las Vegas and he is extremely deserving of this award.”

As the chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands, Mr. Adelson has led the company on an amazing growth trajectory over the past decade. After opening The Venetian in 1999, the company has since opened three properties in Macau, China; The Palazzo in Las Vegas; the Sands in Bethlehem, PA; and is set to open Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on April 27.
Mr. Adelson is one of the world’s leading entrepreneurs and is widely credited for helping transform the city of Las Vegas from a gaming-centric regional location into an international business and leisure destination.
His business career spans more than six decades and has included creating and developing to maturity more than 50 different companies, including the COMDEX tradeshow he developed for the computer industry. At his direction, COMDEX became the world’s largest trade show with a presence in many different countries.
Mr. Adelson and his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, are noted philanthropists who donate to a variety of causes. In addition, Mr. Adelson has been granted honorary degrees and other awards, and has been a guest lecturer for students at various colleges and universities, including the University of New Haven, Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, Stanford, Tel Aviv University and Babson College.
The NH&LA is the unifying voice of Nevada's multi-billion dollar hospitality industry. Serving Nevada since 1979, this trade association represents more than 300 hotel casinos statewide with approximately 150,000 rooms and over 200,000 employees.
