Serve on a committee? Today our lives are stretched thin with work and family obligations. Most people have stressful jobs regardless of the positions. A career in tourism and hospitality industry is a fast-paced, 24 hour, highly visible position. Who has time for additional responsibilities?
People serve on committees and boards for many reasons. One reason is to give back to the community. This works when people serve charities and fundraisers.
Another reason is to network and build a credible reputation for career advancement. Some people are active in associations and want to contribute. Others like to work on committees as they get the opportunity to meet new people and learn new areas. Broadening experience and contacts is key to successful career-building.
What committee participation is available at NHLA?

We have many active committees with participating NHLA members. The sustainability committee is comprised of individuals who believe in utilizing sustainable resources in their properties and lives. A conference is planned for November featuring key speakers from the community in related sustainability areas. Also included will be a trade show for vendors to showcase what they offer to keep our planet green.

The education committee has many industry leaders. This group assists the NHLA team in providing viable educational resources, seminars and webinars for members. NHLA has hosted over 40 educational events this year so far with many more planned for the remainder of the year.

The housekeeping committee is led by Terry Satchwell, EVP with Brady Linen. Several highly experienced housekeeping executives serve on the committee. They bring ideas and challenges faced in housekeeping for NHLA to work on for our members.

The safety and security committee is chaired by Aria’s Security Training Manager, Lisel Westlake. Seminars are presented quarterly with leading field experts talking about trending and related industry topics. The committee is comprised of hotel members specializing in the areas of security, safety and surveillance.
Are you social?

Do you like social media? Our social media committee has several key professionals guiding NHLA in continuing a high social profile. The committee is chaired by Derek Schoen, Director of Marketing at Aria. We are active on Facebook and LinkedIn for our Women in Lodging, Next Reigning Generation (young professionals), and NHLA. We have several interesting videos on the NHLA YouTube channel. Check them out.
Women in Lodging Committees

We have three very active WIL committees. The mentor committee is chaired by Shannon McCallum, Executive Director of Operations for Aria. We offer two mentor/mentee sessions annually and Shannon’s committee oversees the program. The next session is July 7.
The philanthropy committee is co-chaired by Diane Gandy, NHLA President and Mary Giuliano, General Manager at Vdara. Women in Lodging supports two entities through various efforts: Dress for Success Southern Nevada and The Shade Tree. The committee assists in participating in various activities for these two entities and markets donation drives.
The WIL fundraising committee is co-chaired by Lyra Hynie, Director of Revenue at the New Tropicana and Mary Ann Burns, Hotel Director and Corporate Sales Director at Boyd Group. This committee assists in securing sponsors for upcoming WIL events.
