Those people who are fortunate enough to have a mentor early on in their careers will always talk about how that mentor had a positive impact on their careers and lives. Whether the business relationship formed through a structured program or by a chance meeting, mentoring mentees is a fulfilling and beneficial experience for all.
The Women in Lodging mentor program was launched last year under the direction of Diane Gandy, NHLA President. The program committee was formed to oversee and administer it with Executive Director of Hotel Operations at the Aria, Shannon McCallum, taking the lead as the chairperson for the mentor group.

Under Shannon’s expert guidance and management, the program has evolved into a semi-annual event with one in the winter and one in the summer. Each session lasts 12 weeks.
Are you a mentee or a mentor?
NHLA Women in Lodging members can sign up to participate as a mentor or a mentee. After the sign-up period, members are paired together relative to their areas of expertise and knowledge sought.
The mentoring participants are notified and introduced to their mentees initially by email. A welcome meeting is held at a local venue for in-person introductions and program overview.
Throughout the session, mentors meet with their mentees and share knowledge, resources and guidance in the chosen areas. The committee follows-up regularly to ensure everyone is maximizing this amazing opportunity. The committee also makes suggestions and recommendations for enhancing the experience.
Extraordinary experiences shared by participants
Feedback from the previous mentors and mentees has been phenomenal. Everyone has had an extremely positive experience. While gaining insight into areas outside of their current roles, they can consider future opportunities. They are also forming long-time friendships with leaders in the hospitality industry.
