While working hard is important, working hard does not always mean working smart. Facility managers face the risk of employee injury, no matter the industry or size of the business. For employees involved with manual material handling, the risk is even higher.
When looking at workman’s compensation numbers, manual material handling is one of the top risk factors for workplace injury. In fact, four out of five workman’s compensation claims are for musculoskeletal injuries and one third of each workman’s compensation dollar is paid for lower back injuries.
Reduce risk of injury related to manual material handling

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) reports that manual material handling contributes to a large percentage of over half a million cases of musculoskeletal disorders reported annually. To reduce risk of injuries related to manual material handling, the CDC recommends the following:
- Train employees on proper equipment use and appropriate work practices
- Push and pull equipment with the entire body instead of with just the arms and shoulders
- When pushing or pulling, use both hands when possible
- To move heavy loads over long distances, reduce the load or use motorized equipment.
NHLA vendor Amigo Mobility recently launched a new line of motorized material handling carts. The carts were specially designed with a powerful load capacity, but with a smaller footprint for easy maneuvering in a variety of lodging and hospitality environments. Amigo carts can be customized for use in laundry service, food service, cleaning, maintenance and more. Amigo carts are ergonomically designed and easy to use with no formal training required.
